How to resize Microsoft Internet Explorer window to a desired size

Microsoft logo - image by Pixabay Perhaps you encountered with an nuisance of Internet Explorer opening in a small window in some awkward position on a screen when you click on a hyperlink. It looks as though it has been resized and placed there by some evil Microsoft gnome. This is especially annoying when you try to resize the window to the full size, but after closing it its behavior just sticks and this just drives you crazy.

Interestingly enough, there is no official searchable word from Microsoft, nor its Internet Explorer Help provides an answer or exlanation to such a behavior.

Such a behavior is due to the fact that Internet Explorer remembers the last window size when it is closed. However, if that was as simple, all one had to do is to resize an IE window to a desirable size and just close it and the window size should be majically remebered by that pesky Internet Explorer. It's not happening. Here is how that can be done.

  1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer that are currently open, except for one.

  2. In that open window, Right click a link on the web page and select Open in New Window.
(Alternatively, you may open a new browser window by clicking on File → New Window.)
Now, you have two browser windows open.

  3. Close the first instance of the browser window that was originally open using the "X" button in the top right corner.

  4. Resize the existing browser window by dragging the corners or sides to desirable size and position it to desirable location by using the top bar as a holder. For example, you may want to resize it until it is full screen.

  5. While holding down the Ctrl key, close the window using the "X" button in the top right corner.

The next time you open your browser, the window will be of the size and in the position that it was when you closed it in step 5.
